Letters from Hywel's postbag...

"Dear Hywel,

I am writing to say how much I enjoyed John Norris' open week and am particularly grateful to you for your help with my casting problems.

You won't remember me since you must meet so many people during demonstrations and tuition. However, I was the silly old sod who threatened to give you a hug and spoil your day well and truly!

I just love your smooth open casting style and could watch you doing it all day. So many British coaches teach a very 'tight' style which I personally find very difficult to adapt to.

If despite regular practice things start to fall apart again I will contact you to arrange some formal coaching.

Many thanks again for your help."

"Dear Hywel,

Just a quick line to tell you about the magnificent results Australia were able to achieve against New Zealand at the Oceania Championships 2000. For the first time Australia won the event and convincingly. The methods you, John (Horsey) & Iain taught me during the Captains' tour were the edge I needed to beat the Kiwis on their own turf.

A personal thanks for all your help during the captains tour. Your methods really work & have allowed me to reach a new level in competitive fly fishing."

"Dear Hywel,

Just a short note to say thankyou to you... for your time and hospitality on the boat angling course.

I thoroughly enjoyed the day under difficult conditions and have started to put into practice the comments that you made...

I hope to attend future courses as you can only improve by talking & listening to experts. Once again, many thanks for your time & hospitality.

"Dear Hywel,

May I offer my sincere thanks and appreciation for your patience and professionalism during the periods you spent teaching me the basics of casting. It may not have seemed so at the time but I can assure you I derived a great deal of benefit from the sessions... Having now eradicated one or two problems and improved in other areas I can in all honesty say my casting is very much improved, all thanks to you."

Mike Ayre, West Midlands

"Dear Hywel,

First of all I would like to say what a pleasure it was to meet and talk and have a quick casting lesson at this years' game fair. What a delightful young man you are."

Ray King, High Wycombe

"Dear Hywel,

I hope this letter finds you well. Thank you from Ben & myself for a brilliant day fishing. We both learnt an awful lot... perhaps we could do it again sometime."

"Dear Hywel,

On behalf of the Honorary Director for Countryside Care & Country Pursuits, Mr Glyn Sneade, I am writing to express our very grateful thanks to you for your valuable contribution to the success of the 2000 Royal Welsh Show.

Thank you for giving of your time and sharing your expertise in demonstrating fly casting and organising the Famous Grouse competition. The whole presentation was much enjoyed and appreciated by everyone and we hope that you too enjoyed your time with us."

"Dear Hywel,

I have pleasure in enclosing your cheque for your appearance at the Newark & Nottinghamshire County Show. Everyone who watched your demonstrations was very impressed and we hope that you will return next year. This was the first attempt at a rural pursuit area, I think it was well received and that we can certainly build on this next year.

Once again, congratulations and I hope to bump into you at other shows during the season."

Jilly Waddington, Newark & Nottinghamshire Agricultural Society
